Cooling Blanket for Kids: Is It Safe?

Children who sleep hot can benefit from a cooling blanket. Hot summer nights affect children as much as adults, often more, since children generate significant body heat and have less developed temperature regulation. But not all cooling blankets are appropriate for children.

What Safety Certifications to Look For

Class A certification is the most important safety standard for any blanket that will be used by a child. Class A testing covers formaldehyde, fluorescent whitening agents, heavy metals including lead and cadmium, pesticide residues, and dozens of other potentially harmful substances. A blanket that passes Class A testing is safe for direct skin contact for all ages including newborns. If a cooling blanket does not mention Class A certification do not use it for children.

What Age Is Appropriate?

Loose blankets of any type are not recommended for children under 12 months due to suffocation risk. This is a standard pediatric sleep safety guideline that applies regardless of blanket type. For children over 12 months a lightweight cooling blanket is appropriate provided it is not excessively large for the sleep space.
