Low fill weight. A summer-weight comforter with minimal fill insulates less. Breathable outer shell. Percale cotton or bamboo viscose outer shells are significantly better than sateen or microfiber. Low tog rating if specified. Moisture-wicking outer fabric. And ideally a Q-Max score above 0.35 on the shell material.
Cooling Comforters: What the Marketing Means
Most products marketed as cooling comforters use phase change materials or simply lighter weight polyester with a smooth outer surface. These feel cool briefly on contact but do not sustain the cooling effect all night. Genuine sustained cooling requires thermally conductive nylon fiber, not just a lighter comforter.
