Travelling as a hot sleeper means accepting that hotel bedding will almost certainly work against you. Here is how to take control of your sleep temperature wherever you are.
Pack: A Lightweight Cooling Blanket
The single most useful travel item for hot sleepers. A lightweight cooling blanket at under 500g folds to the size of a small pillow. Use it as the top layer against your skin in any hotel bed. Push the hotel duvet aside or use it on top for warmth if needed. The Stillwell Cooling Blanket is the right size and weight for travel. See The Cooling Blanket here.
Pack: A Cooling Pillowcase
A cooling pillowcase weighs almost nothing and transforms even a mediocre hotel pillow into a cool sleeping surface. One of the best weight-to-impact travel items for hot sleepers. See the Cool Night Pillowcase here.
Pack: A Travel Sized Fan
USB-powered travel fans are small enough to fit in a toiletries bag. In a hotel room without a standalone fan this can make a significant difference. Not essential but worth it for frequent travellers.
Leave Behind: Water-Cooled Systems
Too heavy, too complex, requires setup, and the pump noise disturbs sleep. Not practical for travel.
Leave Behind: Full-Size Bedding
A full-size cooling blanket is too bulky for most travel. The lightweight smaller option is the right compromise for travel use.
Hotel Room Strategy
On arrival: set the temperature as low as the system allows. Request a fan. Open the window if the outside temperature is lower than the room. Set up your cooling blanket and pillowcase. You now have a meaningfully better sleep setup than the standard hotel bed provides.
