Cooling blankets are simple to use. There is no installation, no assembly, no technology to configure. But a few small setup decisions make a meaningful difference to how well they work from the first night.
Wash It First
Before the first use wash the cooling blanket on a gentle cold cycle. This removes any residue from the manufacturing process and packaging. Air dry completely before using. Do not use a dryer for the first wash or any subsequent wash.
Use It as Your Direct Top Layer
The cooling blanket needs to be the layer that directly touches your skin. Use it as your top blanket, the layer you pull over yourself when you get into bed. Do not put a duvet or heavy blanket between you and the cooling blanket. If it is not touching your skin the thermal conductivity is dramatically reduced.
Leave It Loose
Do not tuck the cooling blanket tightly under the mattress on all sides. Airflow around the blanket helps it dissipate the heat it draws away from your body. A loosely draped blanket with the sides hanging free performs better than a tightly tucked one.
Cool the Room Too
A cooling blanket works best when the room is already at a reasonable temperature. Target 18-20 degrees Celsius if you have air conditioning. A fan creates airflow that accelerates the heat dissipation from the blanket surface. See bedroom fans on Amazon here.
Give It Two or Three Nights
Some people feel the full difference immediately. Others notice the cumulative effect after a few nights, particularly the improved quality of sleep from not waking up at 3am. Give it three nights before drawing conclusions. The Stillwell Cloud, both sides cool, no wrong side, no complicated setup. See The Cloud here.
