A cooling blanket is an investment in better sleep. Treat it correctly and it performs the same after two years as it did on day one. Treat it incorrectly and the cooling properties degrade — sometimes irreversibly. Here is everything you need to know.
Washing
Machine wash on a gentle or delicate cycle in cold water. Cold water preserves the nylon cooling fibers and prevents shrinkage. A gentle cycle reduces friction that can break down the fabric structure over time.
Use a mild, liquid detergent. Powder detergents can leave residue in the fibers that reduces breathability. Avoid detergents with bleach or fabric softeners — both degrade nylon cooling fiber and reduce thermal conductivity.
Wash the blanket alone or with other delicate items. Washing with heavier items like jeans or towels increases abrasion and can cause pilling.
Drying
Never put a cooling blanket in the dryer on heat. This is the most common mistake and the one most likely to permanently damage the cooling properties. Dryer heat damages nylon fibers at the molecular level — the thermal conductivity that makes the blanket work is reduced and in some cases eliminated entirely. This damage is irreversible.
Always air dry. Lay flat on a clean surface or hang over a drying rack. Avoid direct sunlight for extended periods as UV exposure can weaken fibers over time. The blanket dries relatively quickly given its lightweight construction — typically 2-4 hours depending on conditions.
If you must use a dryer, use the air-only or no-heat setting. This is acceptable but slower than air drying.
Frequency
Wash your cooling blanket every 1-2 weeks with regular use — more frequently if you sweat significantly at night. Regular washing prevents the buildup of body oils and sweat residue which reduce breathability over time.
Storing
Store loosely folded or rolled — not compressed tightly in a vacuum bag. Compression over extended periods can affect the fill structure. Store in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight.
Pilling
Some pilling is normal with nylon fabrics over time, particularly in areas of high friction. A fabric shaver removes pills easily and restores the smooth surface. Washing in a mesh laundry bag reduces friction and slows pill formation.
The Bottom Line
Cold wash, gentle cycle, air dry. That is the essential care routine for a cooling blanket. Follow it consistently and your blanket will perform exactly as it did on day one for years of use.
