Hot Sleeper Routine: How to Set Up Your Evening for Cooler Sleep

Sleep temperature management starts before you get into bed. A consistent evening routine makes a meaningful difference for hot sleepers. Here is what to include.

2-3 Hours Before Bed

Stop drinking alcohol. Alcohol disrupts sleep architecture and significantly increases night sweating. Even one or two drinks consumed in the evening can cause a hot sleeper to wake up drenched at 2-3am. Avoid heavy meals. Digestion raises body temperature. A light evening meal is better for hot sleepers than a heavy one.

1 Hour Before Bed

Begin cooling the bedroom. Open windows if the outside temperature is lower than the room. Run the AC if available. Close blackout curtains to maintain any coolness that has built up. Start reducing your own body temperature through lighter activity. Avoid vigorous exercise in the hour before bed as it raises core temperature for 1-2 hours after.

30 Minutes Before Bed

Take a cool shower. This is one of the most effective interventions for hot sleepers. The cool water lowers your core temperature and the cooling effect persists for 1-2 hours. Not so cold that it is uncomfortable, just noticeably cool. Change into loose, lightweight sleepwear in bamboo viscose or moisture-wicking fabric.

At Bedtime

Ensure the fan is positioned correctly to blow across your body rather than directly at your face. Pull the cooling blanket over you and leave it loosely draped rather than tightly tucked. Both sides of the Stillwell Cloud are cooling so there is no need to check which side is which. See The Cloud here.

The Morning Signal

If you wake up feeling genuinely rested the routine is working. If you still wake during the night from heat review which element is missing.
